Just ordered a .50 BMG AR upper

From http://www.bohicaarms.com/.

I got the 36" barrel with bolt hold-open modifiction (so I can swap uppers on the same lower). Plain Jane black with picatinny bipod. $1,500 delivered. They are 12 weeks out on production. There are more than 500 people on the list in front of me. I decided I'd better get one while they are still legal.

I've got 12 weeks to figure out how to break this to my wife...

I don't think they were in production back then. They told me that their manufacturing facility is now "running like a smooth-oiled machine." They have taken in a total of 1,300+ orders, and they have delivered about 600 so far. They are currently saying 12-weeks. They are supposed to call me to verify my order within a couple days of building it.

Mill Man, you might want to read this thread - http://bohicaarms.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=1471. Yours could be on the way real soon. Otherwise I'd give them a call ASAP.

It was your thread that got me thinking. Sometimes you just have to act rather than sitting around talking about it.
:moon:

I've been trying to make firearm investments in anything that might be banned in the near future. I had been focused on AR stripped lowers and high-cap mags, but the 50 upper just struck me as having the same investment potential. I hope BOHICA Arms is able to get ours done before any ban. In the mean time I'm planning on getting some reloading equipment on hand -- especially brass.

They have been taking orders and predicting delivery dates for well over a year.
Have not heard of anyone having one on the ground yet.
Very nice vapor-ware so far.

So that upper, should fit on any standard AR lowwer??? Like one from Bushy, DPMS, Rock River, etc????

Seems like the shells and mag would just be too big to pass though a standard AR lowwer...

I could be way off; I haven't paid that much attention to .50s as the ammo and everything else seems too expensive and hard to come by as compared to .223, .308 or 7.62x39 stuff I normally stick with...

I know what you mean. I ordered a .50 Beowulf upper last October and it should be here next month. I know it's not a BMG, but it's still a .50 cal. I just don't have the funds for feeding one of those beasts. Hell, I'd be hard pressed to even find an outdoor range near me where I could make full use of it.

Congrats SLV!

Re: Just ordered a .50 BMG AR upper

I assume there are sinlge shot uppers....probably bolt action....just used the lower for lock&stock???

Looks like production ammo is about $4.50 - $5/round.

Components: about $0.50 - $1.00 per bullet, brass looks to be $1.50 - $2.50 for once fired to new..... Primers? probably 10 cents each? Powder? Just guessing about 4X what you use in a 30.06.....35 loads per pound....guess about $0.50/round.....

So, looks like reloading could be down around $1.50 per shot (not including brass)....not too bad for a little fun....

Same here! No .50BMG (although it would be FUN), but I do have a number of .50 cal (12.7x44R) rolling block weapons. See attached picture...

"Beauty" is a 1875 dated receiver (1865 dated barrel) rolling block Swedish Artillery Carbine, originally issued to a bridge laying (Pontonnier) unit. 12.7x44R caliber (sort of a .50-70). Originally black powder, but very fun to shoot with mild Unique loads. The 350-450 grain bullet THUMPS into the backstop.

"Beast" is a F.J. Vollmer conversion (HK94-->MP5), bought about 15 years ago when prices were about 1/3 of where they are today.

Note the difference in size between a 9mm round and a 12.7x44R round.

Look at some of the pictures at www.bohicaarms.com and it will make sense to you. It is a bolt action single-shot upper. The bolt opens back into the empty recoil tube.

I'm using a Rock River lower. The lower takes none of the impact from the recoil. The only potential damage would be from not supporting the barrel properly when disengaging it from the receiver. BTW... the RR lower is supposed to work well with their custom heavier hammer spring. I will also be using their modified bolt catch so I can switch uppers without modifying the lower every time. One more thing... they say that the AR hammer has to be slightly reshaped to work correctly with their upper, or you can buy their alternate hammer.

I'm planning on hand loading. I expect it to cost $2-$3 per round. I'm even planning on casting lead bullets for it -- about one ounce each!

:23_30_104:

The biggest thing for me is the investment potential. I'll shoot it a few times now and then (on my inlaw's 450 acre farm in a Wisconsin valley), but I have a feeling once the next AWB is instated 50 BMG rifles will fetch what full-auto is fetching today.

I have asked around a bit, many people have ordered, many people have been given "ship dates"
These dates seem to come and go.
I DO NOT yet have confirmation of a single bohica unit in use on the ground, I am standing by for updates.

Well, I've just about got everything except for the upper. Total price is going to be right about $1,900 including shipping. I picked up 10 rounds of Lake City 50 BMG on steel links. $3.79 each plus tax -- came out just over $40. After delinking them I cleaned the greased off with WD-40, washed the WD-40 off with 409, removed the tarnish with Brasso, and tumbled them for a day.

The small cartridge (.22 LR) is the same size as the bullet in the medium cartridge, and the medium cartridge is the same size as the bullet in the 50 BMG. Can anyone name the cartridge in the middle?

Shocking isn't it! The entire 7.62x39 shell is the same length as just the bullet from the 50 BMG.

It's on the way! Not the one I ordered...

One of the forum mods at BOHICA auctioned off a 24" generation 2 upper (MK-II) to raise money to help a friend. I won this upper for $1,401.56. A little more than a new one, but consider the following:

1. I will have it this week -- otherwise I might be waiting 18 months
2. I will definately have one before the next AWB
3. I like the generation 2 flat top look better as well as the FAL-style integrated bipod

I was going to get a longer barrel, but with my 10x40 scope (Bushnell Elite 3200 tactical target) the 24" will get me out to the range I can see.

This upper has been upgrade to the much improved MK-III muzzle break.

Anyway, here is a picture of the upper that is on its way to me. I'll post pics once I complete my rifle.

SLV,

I don't think that your low rings are going work on that .50.

Did you find a good ammo source yet?

Welcome to the dark side. WARNING when it comes to .50s you can't eat just one. I predict another in your future.

I've sent the low rings back to Scott at www.libertyoptics.com (AWESOME SUPPLIER -- not everything is listed online, so call him before you order elsewhere. Nobody beats his prices). He is sending out a pair of the Burris Xtreme Tactical Medium rings. They should just clear with enough room for Butler Creek covers.

Here is another picture of MY upper (this is the actual one I am getting as is the picture above):

Here it is! Fully assembled.

Bohica FAR-50 MKII 24" w/MKIII muzzle break
RRA lower
Bushmaster A2 stock (filled with lead)
Steel 20-round magazine (also filled with lead -- complete lower weighs 8 pounds)
Limbsaver slip-on recoil pad (medium)
Burris Extreme scope mounts (medium)
Bushnell Elite 3200 10x40 tactical mil-dot scope
Hogue rubber over-molded grip

I had to make three modifications to my lower:

1. Wolf heavy hammer spring (so the primers would light)
2. Bohica extended bolt release (so they upper would fit)
3. Ground off tabs on hammer (so they don't strike the chamber)

Trigger pull is very heavy. I might be getting a Jard trigger from www.primarlrights.com.

I've seen the ball ammo they have for $250 shipped (100 rounds). It is berdan primed. I've looked at this site for 100 API rounds for $300: http://www.50bmgsupply.com/ammo.shtml. I'm thinking API might get pretty scarce in the future.

I'm planning on paying someone local to reload my brass for me, so I'd like to have boxer primed rounds. Right now I have 30 rounds I purchased at my gun store for $4 round (Lake City ball).

The bolt itself is actually hollow, but the bolt face is a seperate solid unit held in place by the bolt handle threads. The muzzle break weighs about 6 pounds.

I'll be shooting at the Pawnee National Grasslands. Thousands of square miles of nothing but gentle rolling hills -- no trees. For starters I'll be shooting at paper so I can learn the ballistics and practice with the Mil-dot scope.

--------

BTW... I forgot to mention that it has the Mag-pul MIAD enhanced trigger guard. Mostly just because it makes the lower look more substantial on that massive upper.

Some of the ranchers out there can get cranky because they have a range agreement with the federal government. I was once approached by a very unhappy old cowboy on a four-wheeler wearing his six-guns. The biggest concern is that the law prohibits the discharge of a firearm within 1/2 mile of ranging live stock. Another challenge is finding a place to shoot where you have an adequate backstop.

The barrel is 24", and the OAL is 49" (with recoil pad). I had a hard time finding a good case, but I settled on a Guardforce hard composite case (51" inside length) from Sports Authority. With their weekend coupon for $25 off purchases over $100 I paid $101 after tax.

It is tough finding a good case! I think you made a good pick with the Guardforce. I ended up with the aluminum 63" Guardforce for my AR. It was about the only thing that could take the 35 lb+ weight and the 59" length. These things are monsters.

I really eyed the Voodoo Tactical sniper drag bag because it holds two long guns plus two pistols. I decided that the hard case offered more protection. Plus I can fly with the hard case for my fantasy polar bear hunt.

If the rifles didn't have optics a soft case would be the way to go. All the weight with the glass makes a soft case a big no go.
