Just ordered a .50 BMG AR upper
From http://www.bohicaarms.com/.
I got the 36" barrel with bolt hold-open modifiction (so I can swap uppers on the same lower). Plain Jane black with picatinny bipod. $1,500 delivered. They are 12 weeks out on production. There are more than 500 people on the list in front of me. I decided I'd better get one while they are still legal. I've got 12 weeks to figure out how to break this to my wife... |

Mill Man, you might want to read this thread - http://bohicaarms.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=1471. Yours could be on the way real soon. Otherwise I'd give them a call ASAP. |

:moon: I've been trying to make firearm investments in anything that might be banned in the near future. I had been focused on AR stripped lowers and high-cap mags, but the 50 upper just struck me as having the same investment potential. I hope BOHICA Arms is able to get ours done before any ban. In the mean time I'm planning on getting some reloading equipment on hand -- especially brass. |
Re: Just ordered a .50 BMG AR upper
They have been taking orders and predicting delivery dates for well over a year.
Have not heard of anyone having one on the ground yet. Very nice vapor-ware so far. |

Re: Just ordered a .50 BMG AR upper
So that upper, should fit on any standard AR lowwer??? Like one from Bushy, DPMS, Rock River, etc????
Seems like the shells and mag would just be too big to pass though a standard AR lowwer... I could be way off; I haven't paid that much attention to .50s as the ammo and everything else seems too expensive and hard to come by as compared to .223, .308 or 7.62x39 stuff I normally stick with... |

Re: Just ordered a .50 BMG AR upper
I assume there are sinlge shot uppers....probably bolt action....just used the lower for lock&stock???
Looks like production ammo is about $4.50 - $5/round. Components: about $0.50 - $1.00 per bullet, brass looks to be $1.50 - $2.50 for once fired to new..... Primers? probably 10 cents each? Powder? Just guessing about 4X what you use in a 30.06.....35 loads per pound....guess about $0.50/round..... So, looks like reloading could be down around $1.50 per shot (not including brass)....not too bad for a little fun.... |

"Beauty" is a 1875 dated receiver (1865 dated barrel) rolling block Swedish Artillery Carbine, originally issued to a bridge laying (Pontonnier) unit. 12.7x44R caliber (sort of a .50-70). Originally black powder, but very fun to shoot with mild Unique loads. The 350-450 grain bullet THUMPS into the backstop. "Beast" is a F.J. Vollmer conversion (HK94-->MP5), bought about 15 years ago when prices were about 1/3 of where they are today. Note the difference in size between a 9mm round and a 12.7x44R round. |

I'm using a Rock River lower. The lower takes none of the impact from the recoil. The only potential damage would be from not supporting the barrel properly when disengaging it from the receiver. BTW... the RR lower is supposed to work well with their custom heavier hammer spring. I will also be using their modified bolt catch so I can switch uppers without modifying the lower every time. One more thing... they say that the AR hammer has to be slightly reshaped to work correctly with their upper, or you can buy their alternate hammer. I'm planning on hand loading. I expect it to cost $2-$3 per round. I'm even planning on casting lead bullets for it -- about one ounce each! :23_30_104: The biggest thing for me is the investment potential. I'll shoot it a few times now and then (on my inlaw's 450 acre farm in a Wisconsin valley), but I have a feeling once the next AWB is instated 50 BMG rifles will fetch what full-auto is fetching today. |
Re: Just ordered a .50 BMG AR upper
I have asked around a bit, many people have ordered, many people have been given "ship dates"
These dates seem to come and go. I DO NOT yet have confirmation of a single bohica unit in use on the ground, I am standing by for updates. |

I really like that... I wouldn't mind slapping that on my LMT lower....
Does anyone know anyone out there that actually owns one to give an unbiased opinion of it? |
Re: Just ordered a .50 BMG AR upper
Crap, just read their FAQ. No exports outside the US. Looks like I'll still go with the .338 LM TRG-42

Well, I've just about got everything except for the upper. Total price is going to be right about $1,900 including shipping. I picked up 10 rounds of Lake City 50 BMG on steel links. $3.79 each plus tax -- came out just over $40. After delinking them I cleaned the greased off with WD-40, washed the WD-40 off with 409, removed the tarnish with Brasso, and tumbled them for a day.
The small cartridge (.22 LR) is the same size as the bullet in the medium cartridge, and the medium cartridge is the same size as the bullet in the 50 BMG. Can anyone name the cartridge in the middle? |

It's on the way! Not the one I ordered...
One of the forum mods at BOHICA auctioned off a 24" generation 2 upper (MK-II) to raise money to help a friend. I won this upper for $1,401.56. A little more than a new one, but consider the following: 1. I will have it this week -- otherwise I might be waiting 18 months 2. I will definately have one before the next AWB 3. I like the generation 2 flat top look better as well as the FAL-style integrated bipod I was going to get a longer barrel, but with my 10x40 scope (Bushnell Elite 3200 tactical target) the 24" will get me out to the range I can see. This upper has been upgrade to the much improved MK-III muzzle break. Anyway, here is a picture of the upper that is on its way to me. I'll post pics once I complete my rifle. |
Re: Just ordered a .50 BMG AR upper
SLV,
I don't think that your low rings are going work on that .50. Did you find a good ammo source yet? Welcome to the dark side. WARNING when it comes to .50s you can't eat just one. I predict another in your future. Don't forget the pics when she comes in. |
